Beginning iOS Development

My brother recently purchased a Macbook Pro and has decided to start learning how to code for iOS (and potentially other platforms as well). There has never been a better time to get into software development, especially iOS development. I’ve been in the iOS space since it’s inception and wanted to put together a guide for beginners covering various topics, tips, and resources that I wish I had early in my career.

Blogging With Hugo

I recently converted my blog from Octopress to Hugo. I really like Hugo. It’s easy to use and ridiculously fast. Hugo also aligns well with my recent foray into Go and it’s been a delight to comb through the source code.
Given the infrequency of my posts I usually have to re-learn my blog workflow every time I created a new post. To make things easier I put together a README that details my post/publish workflow.

CYRTextView

Prior to iOS 7, rich text editing was a beast. Apps that supported rich text in any meaningful fashion were few and far between. iOS 7 changed all that. What was once took herculean effort is now child’s play!
I’ve started working on an iOS 7 optimized version of QED Solver. A big part of this is re-factoring the rich text editor view. I was able to whip up a prototype in about 2 hours thanks to some excellent TextKit resources.

Seasonalysis v3.0

I’ve been working on and off on Seasonalysis 3.0 for the past 4-5 months. Seasonalysis was my very first app on the App Store. There was a lot of legacy code and poor architectural descisions so I decided to rewrite the app from the ground up for iOS 7.
I’ve been using iOS 7 since WWDC and very much appreciate the new design aesthetic. I was hoping to have the update ready for iOS 7’s release but due to other commitments that won’t happen.
